Quality issues at Samsung: the Galaxy Z Fold 6 in question
Manufacturing defects seem to be multiplying at Samsung. The latest one concerns the top-of-the-range Galaxy Z Fold 6. Several users have reported a problem with paint peeling off on their new device. Samsung has pointed the finger at third-party chargers as responsible for this defect.
Third-party chargers to blame?
In response to these complaints, Samsung published a support page stating that the use of third-party chargers and certain accessories could damage the device, including causing the paint to peel. They explain that a poorly grounded charger can introduce a “leakage current” that affects the anodization of the phone’s metal and can cause paint to chip.
It is also mentioned that Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS) massagers can cause paint problems. In this case, Samsung recommends keeping the phone away from any part of the body during treatment.
Questions about anodizing
However, these explanations raise some questions. According to the Aluminum Anodizers Council, anodizing is an electrochemical process that applies aluminum oxide to a metal surface. This layer is integrated into the structure of the metal itself, so it should not flake. If the Z Fold 6 is anodized as Samsung claims, the paint shouldn’t come off their phones. The expected defects would be scratches or marks, which would indicate low durability.
Quality Control Issues at Samsung
This isn’t the first time Samsung has experienced quality control issues with its recently launched products. The Galaxy Watch Ultra smartwatch has also been reported mentioning chipped finishes. Prior to this, Samsung had canceled pre-orders for the Galaxy Buds 3 earbuds due to manufacturing issues. Despite these isolated incidents, it’s too early to talk about a trend, but it’s clear that Samsung faces challenges when it comes to quality control of its products.
