Compact and accessible design
Currently, the RF-S7.8mm F4 STM Dual is the smallest and most affordable VR space lens into the market introduced by Canon. Measuring like a typical lens, it is specifically developed for users to be able create 3D images conveniently. At a price of $449, the device offers low-entry cost VR for people who want to get their feet wet.
By compatibility and technical characteristics
This lens from Canon is specifically made for APS-C cameras, specifically the EOS R7 which is currently going for $1300 for the body only. The total cost of approximately $1750 for the whole equipment allows it to become a viable option among the manufacturers offering more costly devices. EOS R7 offers 32.5 megapixel resolution for photographing and users can see high quality, however, lens design does not allow capturing certain shooting distances.
Hence the need to compare the current model with the previous models prevailed.
From this, we can see that the RF-S7.8mm F4 STM Dual is different from the older RF5.2mm F2.8 L Dual Fisheye, which even though has an almost 180 degrees field of view, was larger and cost $2000. Also, they had noted that the absence of autofocus lens in this version was less portable for many of them. On the other hand, the new model has autofocus and improves the ergonomics of the camera making it easier to capture 3D images.
Processing and output formats
You will need to bring raw data into your camera for post processing in order to view them taken with the RF-S7.8mm F4 STM Dual as the application to view videos and photos taken is EOS VR Utility which has some charge or the Premiere Pro Plugin which is also charged for. Once the content is processed it can be watched on headsets including Meta Quest 3 as well as Apple Vision Pro in theatrical 3D video or spatial video kinds of formats. This expands the opportunities for creators who increasingly want to immerse themselves in the creation of virtual reality.
